Wire Harness Seals

The durability and reliability of automotive components are becoming increasingly important. As a protective material, rubber parts are used in large numbers in automobiles. The importance of seals is self-evident. Especially for the protection of the wiring harnesses in the engine compartment and the lower chassis of the car. This is because these two areas usually have a high chance of being exposed to harsh environments.

Wet Zone

There is a concept of a "wet zone" that needs to be known. Generally speaking, we call the engine compartment and the lower part of the car exposed to rain and water "wet zone",

Dry zone

Correspondingly, the cockpit and luggage compartment and other parts are basically not affected by rain, this part is called the "dry zone".

The role of the wire harness seal

One of the biggest roles of the wire harness seal is to isolate the wet and dry areas, which is an application, common parts are assembled between the engine compartment and the cockpit to separate the dry and wet areas; there is also the left and right rear ABS harness where the need to assemble wire harness seals, specifically in the rear seat below (such as the Golf), where there is a wire harness seal to separate the internal and external parts, to ensure that the water at the bottom of the driving process will not leak into the cab.

How to test the quality of the wire harness seal

Each qualified wiring harness will be tested for air wire harness sealing to ensure that the wire harness seal on the harness will work, generally, in the harness factory, we use vacuum test testing equipment to do the job. The equipment working principle is very simple, the wire harness seal is placed on the mold, the equipment provides a continuous increase in pressure value, the air inside out, within a certain time and pressure value, if the wire harness seal can withstand, is good, and vice versa, there are quality problems.

Why the wet zone connectors are generally required to add wire harness seals?

Connectors and other electronic components into the water in two main ways, the first is the external liquid penetration into its interior by the gravity of the earth's core, such as connectors without wire harness seals. The second way is water from the internal connection points of the harness (such as unprotected solder joints/crimp points/lap joints).

General electrical appliances in the work of a certain temperature, the internal air to form a certain pressure, when stopped working, the temperature drops, the internal pressure is also small, this will form a difference in air pressure, if the connector is poorly wire harness sealed, moisture will follow the gap between the multi-strand copper wire into the internal, resulting in functional failure. Therefore, the wet zone connectors are generally required to add wire harness seals.

In general, the wire harness seal is a very important part of the harness, its quality is directly related to the function of the harness, whether used directly on the harness or in the connector.
